Southampton are looking to get a January deal done for Lorient striker Terem Moffi ‘quickly,’ according to reports.

The Saints have been struggling to score goals of late and currently find themselves bottom of the Premier League table, winning just three of their opening 16 league bouts.

Moffi could be an important signing for new manager Nathan Jones, as he looks to avoid a relegation battle, which with their current forward options seems inevitable.

The Saints have managed to score a measly 14 goals in 16 games this season, the fifth-fewest in the Premier League at the moment.

Their top scorer is Che Adams, but he has only scored four times so far, so they are definitely in need of attacking reinforcements.

According to transfer expert Graeme Bailey, writing for 90minSouthampton are ‘looking to get a deal done quickly’ for Moffi ahead of the upcoming window, with them ‘actively pursuing’ a deal.

Jones is reportedly very keen on the Nigerian, who has been in fine form for Lorient this season.

Moffi has scored an outstanding 10 goals in 15 appearances in Ligue 1, but this is by no means a flash in the pan, as he’s also scored 22 in his last two seasons.

At just 23 years old, the centre-forward has the potential to get even better and standing at 6ft 2 has the ideal physicality for the Premier League.

Moffi could potentially save Southampton’s season

As mentioned, Southampton are in desperate need of attacking reinforcements.

While Adams has had a half-decent start to the 2022/23 campaign, scoring eight times in all competitions (four in the league), in second place is central midfielder James Ward-Prowse with just three goals and no other player has scored more than two.

Moffi is massively out-performing all Southampton players this season. If he can continue his prolific run of form in England, it could be enough to save the Saints from the drop.

In fact, if you compare the stats of Adams and Moffi, the Nigerian beats Southampton’s number 10 in almost every department.

Moffi averages 2.1 shots on target compared to Adams’ 2. He also has a superior passing accuracy with 74.2% compared with the Scotsman’s 68.8%. On the ball, the Lorient forward is better too, completing 1.3 successful dribbles versus Adams’ 0.7

However, while the Saints’ interest in Moffi is concrete, getting a deal over the line will not necessarily be easy.

Moffi’s goals fired Lorient to seventh place in Ligue 1, with them currently only three points away from the top four.

If the French side can bridge the gap, it would be the first time in their history that they have qualified for European football. Thus, they won’t let their main man go easily.

Transfermarkt currently value Moffi at 15m (£13.2m), but with this being a mid-season negotiation, the ultimate fee could be upwards of £20m.

While this is a considerable amount for Southampton, if Jones believes signing Moffi will be enough to keep them in the Premier League, it will be a price worth paying.
