Southampton boss Nathan Jones is reportedly under increased pressure after some questionable comments following their defeat to Brentford on Saturday.

The Saints were defeated 3-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium, leaving them rock-bottom of the Premier League table and three points away from safety,

It is believed that Jones’ comments have not been well-received by the club’s hierarchy after he criticised people behind the scenes.

In a bizarre outburst, the English coach voiced his frustrations over having to ‘compromise’ certain things within the club, as well as saying: “‘There are certain people in the village and players in the building that we have to work with.”

It’s been an abysmal start to the season for Southampton, who have picked up just 15 points from 21 matches so far.

The former Luton Town boss took over from Ralph Hassenhuttl in November after they lost six of their seven opening games, but their form has yet to improve.

Following their defeat to Brentford, Jones said: “I have compromised. I’ve compromised in terms of certain principles because of one, personnel, but two, the way that people want to play and so on.

“I’ve allowed certain things to happen and gone away from what’s made me successful in the past.

“I’ve compromised because of fans, and so on, a few little things but – no more.

“I’ve been very successful playing a fluent style, Luton were a real aggressive front-footed side.

“Statistically, there weren’t many better than me around Europe in terms of aggression, clean sheets, defending the box, balls in the box, xG, all those sorts of things.”

Jones’ comments have not been well-received by Saints fans, who have been let down by consistently poor performances of late.

Southampton did reach the semi-final of the League Cup, but ultimately their priority is staying in the Premier League, which is a task that so far Jones is failing at.

Now, according to the Athletic, Southampton’s owners are set to review his questionable post-match comments.

It is also claimed that Jones’ remarks have angered senior players at the club, who also dispute his claim that ‘there weren’t many better than me’ during his time with the Hatters.

Former Blackburn striker Chris Sutton has also described Jones’ comments as ‘delusional’ and added that Southampton ‘would be better off without him.’

Saints fans were heard chanting ‘get out of our club and ‘you don’t know what you’re doing’ after Jones decided to substitute Romeo Lavia during the defeat to Brentford.

In response, Jones said: ‘The fans saw a performance today that justified those sayings and that’s fine.

“All I can say to them is that I understand. To be fair, they’ve sung that at any point I’ve made a substitution.

“If we keep Lavia on a booking they will counter-attack inside, so we were at risk.

“Was Romeo Lavia running the game? Was he outbattling or dominating their team? If he was, they were watching a different game to me.”

Southampton have three crucial league matches coming up, against Wolves, Chelsea and Leeds United, so it seems likely that those results will decide the manager’s future.

Saying that, the way things are going, Jones could be sacked even earlier than that.
