After the sacking of former boss Ralph Hasenhuttl, Southampton are reportedly going to offer the vacant manager’s job to Luton Town boss Nathan Jones.

Hasenhuttl’s time with the Saints was called in November, after four years in charge at the club. While in his best season, the boss inspired his side to 11th place, there was a drop-off beyond that point.

Indeed, for the last two seasons, Southampton have finished in 15th place in the Premier League.

At present, the St Mary’s outfit are in the drop zone, in 18th place. Wins have been hard to come by this season, with Hasenhuttl having inspired his side to just three league victories.

Only one of those wins occurred after the start of September.

There have been a host of losses, too. Indeed, the Saints have lost the joint-most amount of games in the Premier League this season, with eight.

The final nail in the coffin for Hasenhuttl was a 4-1 loss to Newcastle United on 6th November.

Indeed, Southampton confirmed the manager’s time at the club had ended the following day.

Nathan Jones set to take charge

Reports that followed suggested that Luton Town manager Jones was the favourite to take the job.

The Championship side confirmed that they had given Southampton permission to speak to their manager.

The Daily Mail now reports that Southampton are ‘set to’ offer him the job. Compensation has been ‘agreed’ between the two clubs regarding the change of manager.

That report also states that Jones could be in charge by the next Premier League game, as the Saints face Liverpool away from home on Saturday.

Jones has been in charge at Luton for more than six seasons across two spells. The Welshman guided the Hatters to a sixth-placed finish in the Championship last season.

At present, the side are eighth in the table. While he has never managed in the Premier League, Jones has done a top job at Luton, and could do well following the step up to Southampton.
