Spain squad: West Ham’s Pablo Fornals on standby for Euros after Sergio Busquets tests positive for Covid-19

West Ham midfielder Pablo Fornals is one of five players called up by Spain to train in a parallel bubble, amid fears Sergio Busquets’ positive test for Covid-19 could spread throughout the squad.

Spain captain Busquets has tested positive for coronavirus and it has caused Luis Enrique’s side to pull out of their friendly with Lithuania on Tuesday. The country’s under-21 side will now play the game.

The rest of the Spain squad tested negative for Covid-19 when tested on Sunday, but they are currently in isolation with Euro 2020 due to start this week.

Spain’s 24-man squad undergo daily PCR tests and they face a nervous wait over the next few days to see if the virus has spread.

Amid fears the virus could spread, Spain have called up four players to train in a parallel bubble to the main group - who are currently training individually as they’re isolating.

West Ham midfielder Fornals is one of the quartet called up, along with Leeds’ Rodrigo, Carlos Soler of Valencia, Brais Mendez of Celta Vigo and Raul Albiol of Villarreal.

In addition, once the game against Lithuania is over, a small group of players yet to be confirmed will join the training sessions of the senior team under the same conditions as the previous ones. They will train at different times and will not mix with others.

The players invited to the training sessions will remain outside the main squad’s bubble and will only go daily to the camp after passing Covid-19 tests before and during their stay on site.

Players could earn a full call-up to the Euro 2020 squad depending on how much the virus has spread this week.
