Real Madrid widened the gap between them and third place Atletico with a 5-1 win over Levante on Saturday, and the pressure of such a gap appeared to affect Diego Simeone’s side.
A keenly contested opening half saw Radamel Falcao presented with the game’s first real chance, side-footing wide of the target from close range after good play by Diego Costa on the left flank.
Both sides looked to be pressing high on the opposition and Atletico came close to opening the scoring on the counter attack, when Adrian’s shot was blocked by Fede Fernandez.
With just minutes before the break Falcao passed up another good chance in front of goal, this time heading tamely into the arms of Jordi Codina after a good free-kick from Koke.
Mario Suarez was shown a second yellow card with just under 20 minutes to go, deliberately handling the ball to stem a Getafe counter attack.
Simeone continued to ask his side to press forward and Falcao forced a good save from Codina after twisting and turning inside the box.
However, Atletico couldn’t find the breakthrough and finished the match with nine men after Godin was also shown a second yellow for bringing down Alvaro Vazquez in stoppage time.
