A supporter has been rushed to hospital after a horror fall at Wembley Stadium during England's opening European Championship match.

Uefa confirmed a ticket-holder was in a "serious" condition but were unable to comment on supporter speculation that they may have fallen from a tier inside the stadium.

Exact circumstances of the fall are unknown but medics would have been able to quickly attend to the supporter as the stadium was only 25 per cent full.

"Uefa can confirm that a spectator fell from the stands and was taken to hospital in a serious condition," the governing body said. "For further information, please contact the local authorities due to privacy reasons."

The confirmation from the governing body came immediately after full-time as England began their tournament campaign with a 1-0 victory against Croatia.

After Telegraph Sport disclosed details of the fall, horrified eyewitnesses told London's Evening Standard they saw the fan plunge towards the seats and concrete at around kick-off time.

“We saw his legs go over the barrier and then he fell and hit the ground and didn’t move," the unidentified fan told The Standard. “It seemed to take staff ages to get to him. One guy near us who saw the whole thing was crying his eyes out.”

A Wembley Stadium statement added: “We can confirm that a spectator fell from the stands just after kick-off in the match between England and Croatia at Wembley Stadium. The spectator was given on-site medical attention and was then taken to hospital in a serious condition. We will continue to work with Uefa to ensure the matter is fully investigated and we are continuing to monitor the situation.”
