Sporting vs Tottenham – LIVE!

Spurs this evening make their first away trip in the Champions League in over two years with a journey to the Portuguese capital of Lisbon. Sporting CP await and will look to put domestic difficulty behind them, with highly rated manager Ruben Amorim struggling to get much consistency this season. They currently sit seventh in the Primeira Liga having won three of their opening six games.

Unbeaten Tottenham, meanwhile, are yet to blow onlookers away this season but look as dogged as one might expect of an Antonio Conte team. By and large, they’ve got the job done thus far and certainly have the quality to expose a Sporting team who have shown little desire to give up any ground.

With both sides claiming a victory during their opening games, this looks like a crucial clash in defining who progresses out of Group D as winners. Follow all of the action LIVE with Standard Sport’s dedicated match blog. Simon Collings will be providing expert analysis from the ground!

Sporting vs Tottenham latest news

  • How to watch: BT Sport 3

  • Score prediction: Spurs to win 1-0

Sporting Clube de Portugal 2 - 0 Tottenham Hotspur FC

19:42 , Alex Young

Spurs lose for the first time in just under five months!

So many underperforming players tonight, but Spurs are still shocked.

Full-time

19:42 , Alex Young

What a finale!

GOAL!

19:38 , Alex Young

92min: Gomes has just come on, skins Emerson and slots home!

A huge goal in the group! And what a goal it is.

Simon Collings in Lisbon

19:36 , Alex Young

A hammer blow for Tottenham, right at the death. Home fans here going bonkers in the stands, hugging each other.

GOAL!

19:35 , Alex Young

90min: Substitute Paulinho heads home the corner in the final minute!

Huge goal in this group!

19:31 , Alex Young

87min: A promising Spurs move collapses when Richarlison kicks the ball out of play, bizarrely.

19:29 , Alex Young

85min: You feel Sporting are the team who sense a late winner here, despite Spurs dominating this second half.

19:24 , Alex Young

80min: Another poor touch from Kane lets down a good opportunity to break. Looks like a different player tonight, and not in a remotely good way.

19:20 , Alex Young

77min: Kulusevski finds Richarlison at the near post but the Brazilian can’t angle a difficult header on target.

19:18 , Alex Young

74min: Kane loses possession again. It’s not been his night so far.

He runs back to get the ball but concedes a foul.

19:15 , Alex Young

73min: Kulusevski replaces Son.

Chance!

19:15 , Alex Young

71min: Perisic puts it on a plate for Kane, but the striker is inches away from contact.

Best chance so far.

19:14 , Alex Young

70min: Kulusevski is coming on.

19:08 , Alex Young

65min: Spurs firmly on top but Sporting still threatening on the counter when their visitors are a little sloppy in possession, which is common.

19:05 , Alex Young

61min: Spurs rob the ball off Sporting in their own half and break through Richarlison, but the Brazilian ignores Kane to his left and Son to his right and ends up finding a Sporting player with his pass.

Poor.

Simon Colings in Lisbon

19:02 , Alex Young

Kulusevski has been out warming up literally since the second half started. Surely won’t be long before we see him come on.

18:57 , Alex Young

53min: Spurs have started on top, just like they did in the first half.

18:53 , Alex Young

49min: Another for Emerson!

A well-working free kick routine sees the right-back peel off at the back post and half-volley a shot straight at the keeper, who does well to save.

18:52 , Alex Young

48min: Chance!

A fine whipped cross from Kane lands on Emerson’s head at the back post, but the keeper claws it away. Was a difficult chance and did well to get it on target.

Second half

18:49 , Alex Young

46min: Back underway in Lisbon.

No changes.

18:44 , Alex Young

It was an even half without any real chance of note, until Edwards decided to dance through Spurs’ defence before being denied.

Spurs lacking that type of creativity in the final third.

Half-time

18:34 , Alex Young

48min: That’s your lot.

18:33 , Alex Young

47min: Wow!

Edwards almost gives Sporting the lead with a remarkable run, but Lloris just about denies him at the near post.

That would have been something else.

18:31 , Alex Young

46min: There are two minutes added on.

NO GOAL!

18:28 , Alex Young

42min: Richarlison thinks he has given Spurs the lead, rounding the keeper and slotting home, but he's again offside.

18:23 , Alex Young

37min: Another sight of goal for Richarlison as Dier lofts a ball over the top, but again the offside flag is raised. That one was far tighter.

18:20 , Alex Young

35min: A sight of goal for Son, after Kane feeds Richarlison and the Brazilian unselfishly lays the ball off, but the summer signing is a good yard off.

Simon Collings in Lisbon

18:18 , Alex Young

Tottenham just starting to turn the screw a bit now. Richarlison is looking hungry and the wing-backs are starting to find some space. Promising stuff before half-time.

18:16 , Alex Young

31min: Davies is down after being clattered by Dier. He should be alright.

18:15 , Alex Young

29min: Emerson does superbly to drill a low ball across the face of Sporting’s goal, but no player gambles.

From the following throw in, the defender tries an acrobatic flick towards goal which the keeper clutches easily.

Two sides of the player.

18:12 , Alex Young

26min: Two chances for Richarlison is as many minutes; a shot from the edge of the box is blocked before a header lacks enough power to beat Adan in goal.

18:10 , Alex Young

23min: A couple of misplaced passes from Kane have twice allowed Sporting to break before his team-mates mopped up.

As I said, it’s all a bit frantic at the moment.

18:08 , Alex Young

20min: A few shouts from Conte on the touchline. Sporting are starting to push Spurs back, but it’s pretty frantic in the middle of the park.

Simon Collings in Lisbon

18:07 , Alex Young

True to Ruben Amorim's word, Sporting have come here to play. They are being bold at the back when in possession and the full-backs are bombing forward too.

The home fans approve.

17:59 , Alex Young

13min: Edwards is enjoying himself, turning away from Spurs players and into space with a view to setting up another chance.

17:57 , Alex Young

10min: Bar that Sporting chance, it’s all Spurs in Lisbon without yet testing the goalkeeper.

Conte will be pleased, but there’s a long way to go.

17:53 , Alex Young

7min: Edwards gets his foot on the ball for the first time and carves out a fine attempt for Goncalves, which Lloris has to tip around his post.

Messi-esque from Marcus.

Simon Collings in Lisbon

17:51 , Alex Young

Marcus Edwards, once of Tottenham, is playing as a false nine for Sporting. Feels fitting given the Messi comparisons.

17:51 , Alex Young

5min: Bentancur has absolutely leathered a shot from 30 yards and it’s wiped out Inacio. That’s going to leave a mark.

17:48 , Alex Young

3min: It’s whipped towards the near post but Sporting hack it away at the second attempt.

17:47 , Alex Young

2min: Spurs on the front foot in the early stages, forcing a corner.

Kick-off

17:46 , Alex Young

1min: We’re under way!

17:45 , Alex Young

There is a minute's silence ahead of kick-off in honour of the Queen.

A few whistles heard.

17:43 , Alex Young

The BT Sport commentator just said: “Spurs become the first English league team to take the field in the reign of King Charles III.”

Quite the honour!

17:40 , Alex Young

Here come the teams.

Conte to BT Sport

17:31 , Alex Young

The Spurs manager has been discussing his team news and the challenge tonight.

He said: "I make the best decision to go game by game. Richarlison played very well against Marseille and Fulham, he deserves to start.

"You don't have many games to get points, so every game is really important.

"To play against a Portuguese team is always very difficult, especially away. The stadium will be very noisy ... we must manage this situation very well."

H2H

17:08 , Alex Young

This is the first ever meeting between Sporting and Spurs, which is perhaps a surprise.

The last three English teams have left Lisbon with a win. Sporting last beat England opposition over a decade ago when Manchester City came to town.

Team news

16:59 , Alex Young

So, Richarlison does get the nod but so too does Romero.

Kulusevski will have to make do for a place on the bench, but should come on later.

Dier starts against his former side, as does Edwards.

Kick-off in just over 45 minutes.

Sporting XI

16:49 , Alex Young

Sporting XI: Adan, Inacio, Coates, Matheus Reis, Porro, Morita, Ugarte, Nuno Santos, Trincao, Edwards, Goncalves

Subs: Alexandropoulos, Israel, Rochinha, Issahaku, Paulinho, Andre Paulo, Arthur Gomes, Ricardo Esgaio, Marsa, Nazinho

Simon’s thoughts

16:43 , Alex Young

There was a bit of debate yesterday evening after Conte's press conference whether Son would be dropped. He hasn't scored this season, but Conte is seemingly backing the South Korean to play himself into form.

Sporting like to press high, so tonight could be the night he gets off the mark.

Spurs XI

16:40 , Alex Young

Tottenham XI: Lloris; Romero, Dier, Davies; Emerson, Bentancur, Hojbjerg, Perisic; Richarlison, Kane, Son

Subs: Forster, Doherty, Skipp, Sanchez, Gil, Sessegnon, Kulusevski, Spence, Tanganga, Lenglet, Bissouma, White

Dier reunion, too

16:33 , Alex Young

While we wait, it’s worth pointing out that there will be a Sporting reunion for Eric Dier, too.

The defender-turned midfielder-turned defender started his career with the Portuguese giants before joining Spurs eight years ago for around £4m.

Team news is imminent.

Tottenham’s Messi returns

16:12 , Alex Young

There will, of course, be a familiar face in the Sporting line-up this evening as former Spurs wonderkid Marcus Edwards will be leading the line.

Mauricio Pochettino once compared him to Lionel Messi but just three years later he had been shipped out to Vitoria in Portugal under a cloud of reported disciplinary problems and disappointing loan spells elsewhere.

Fast forward another three years and Edwards is now at Sporting and some of that early promise is threatening to reappear.

He scored against Arsenal in the Europa League shortly after joining Vitoria but, despite his previous ties to Spurs, a club he joined as an eight-year-old, another tonight will be the icing on the cake.

Score prediction

15:51 , Alex Young

We have backed Spurs to do better than their Youth League counterparts, and run out 1-0 winners in a nervy game.

Spurs should not worry about rust after receiving what could prove to be a welcome moment of respite in their busy schedule. Some may settle for a point in Lisbon but the Premier League club should have too much for their opponents.

A 1-0 Tottenham win.

Young’uns

15:45 , Alex Young

The senior side will hope to perform better than the Under-19s, who have gone down 2-0 to their Sporting counterparts earlier today.

Mateus Fernandes and Rodrigo Riberio scored either side of half-time for a fairly comfortable win.

The results leaves the Spurs youngsters third in Group D, with one win and one defeat in the UEFA Youth League.

Predicted XI

15:28 , Alex Young

We have Simon Collings in Lisbon this evening, with Dan Kilpatrick on leave, and he is backing both Cristian Romero and Dejan Kulusevski to make way.

Tottenham predicted XI (3-4-3): Lloris; Romero, Dier, Lenglet; Royal, Bentancur, Hojbjerg, Perisic; Richarlison, Kane, Son.

We should know in around an hour.

Kulusevski or Son to miss out?

15:18 , Alex Young

Antonio Conte has another welcome selection headache for tonight's game.

Richarlison last week scored twice in his Champions League debut against Marseille and should retain his place, though that means one of Dejan Kulusevski, Harry Kane and Son Heung-min will miss out despite producing such fine form since January.

Kulusevski is the most likely, you would think, though Son's form remains a slight concern.

Spurs only have one injury worry ahead of the game, with Lucas Moura still out injured.
