Spurs confirm Lloris drink driving charge taken 'extremely seriously'

Tottenham Hotspur and Hugo Lloris have issued statements following the goalkeeper’s arrest for drink driving.

The Spurs captain was arrested after failing a roadside breathalyser test.

The 31-year-old Lloris was stopped by police at 2.20am in Gloucester Place, London, on Friday morning.

He has been released on bail to appear at Westminster magistrates’ court next month.

The Metropolitan Police said: “A man has been charged following a routine patrol stop in Gloucester Place, W1.

“Hugo Lloris, 31, of East Finchley, was charged with drink driving on Friday, 24 August.

“He has been bailed to return to Westminster magistrates’ court on Tuesday, 11 September.”

Lloris, 31, is the Spurs club captain and won the World Cup with France this summer.

The news broke too late for manager Mauricio Pochettino to be asked about the matter during the press conference ahead of Monday’s game against Manchester United.

In a short statement issued to the press, Spurs said:

“The Club takes matters such as this extremely seriously and it will be dealt with internally.”

Shortly after, Lloris released a statement of his own, saying: “I wish to apologise wholeheartedly to my family, the club, my teammates, the manager and all of the supporters.

“Drink driving is completely unacceptable, I take full responsibility for my actions and it is not the example I wish to set.”

If Lloris is dropped for the game against United then Michel Vorm would be in line to take his place in goal.
