Spurs Transfer Jabber: The 'Déjà vu' Edition

All quiet on the Deadline Day front..

As the Winter Transfer Window draws its curtains for another year on Monday, what better way to while away the remaining hours than to sift through the dung heaps of idle speculation and see what truths can be unearthed. Gossip is the Devil’s radio, as they say. Well tune in, baby. It’s my favourite station.

First up, to the Championship. Various news vendors appear to be in agreement that Moussa Dembélé is on his way from Fulham to Tottenham. Before you worry that you might have stepped into a plotline from Flight of The Navigator and whisked back in time somehow— this guy sounds familiar, Davy! —let me assure you that this is a different chap altogether. Fulham of course have a habit of harbouring curious namesakes within their ranks; as fans of John Collins and Collins John will attest.

The consensus seems to be that the 19-year old French striker would be hurled straight into the Spurs squad, as immediate cover for Harry Kane, rather than be loaned back to Fulham for what’s left of the season. As was the case with Dele Alli last January.

Dembélé has 11 goals in 26 this season for the Cottagers, which, while not figures to set your trousers on fire with excitement, are impressive for someone so young. A £5million initial fee is supposedly the magic number that will grease the wheels into motion.

What’s the cause of this uncharacteristic bit of money flinging from Daniel ‘Negative Net Spend’ Levy, I hear you ask? As luck would have it, a few coins rolled into the Hotspur Vault at the beginning of the week, with the departure of Andros Townsend to Tyneside. Or Andros Toonsend as Newcastle’s mischievous social media team dubbed him.

The Northeast club stumped up £12million for the England winger, a deal which looks to be a good fit for all parties. Newcastle are desperate for some pace and creativity to kick-start their flat-lining campaign, Townsend still has vague hopes for Euro 2016 and Spurs, well, they have a chairman who loves an overinflated price for a young Englishman. Everyone’s happy.

As far as anyone else coming in goes, sadly, even the rumours are underwhelming. Ben Chillwell, who impressed in Leicester’s recent F.A Cup fixtures with Spurs, is thought to have been monitored by both Tottenham and Arsenal in recent weeks. Did someone say, title ambitions?

Elsewhere Coventry City are rumoured to be willing to allow highly-rated teenager James Maddison to leave in January, again for around £5million. As is often the way of things, though, they’d also like him straight back again until the season’s end.

Still no word yet on Leandro Damião.

Keep watching the skies.
