In 2015, Stefon Diggs hogged the headlines during the Minnesota Vikings training camp. His explosiveness and playmaking ability dazzled spectators as they gathered in Mankato to watch the team prepare for the regular season.

Who is that going to be this summer at training camp? Which player will jump off the field and stand out the most amongst their peers?

Why not Danielle Hunter? Pass rushing is becoming a deciding factor in the game of football, especially after Vaughn Miller’s performance in the postseason last year. With his gifted athleticism, Minnesota hopes to see Hunter arrive at camp ready to take that next step.

Although the two play completely different positions, Hunter and Diggs do have some similar qualities. Both have superior athletic skills with high ceilings. Each could be the “X-factor” on their respective side of the ball this season.

As a rookie, Hunter was slowly eased into the season. Many scouts had him pegged as raw and undeveloped coming out of college but Hunter changed that perspective. Coming off the bench, he was able to gather an eye popping six sacks.

Opposing offensive linemen struggled to keep up with Hunter’s speed and quickness off the ball as he was able to consistently dip and dive around them. Whenever Brian Robison and Everson Griffen needed a breather, Hunter gave the Vikings dependable depth without any drop off and if anything, was an improvement.

With Robison getting older, the Vikings have insurance with Hunter. If Hunter continues to impress the coaching staff in camp he could eventually move into a starting role. It is not easy to replace the impact Robison has made in Minnesota but if anyone, Hunter would be the man for the job. Not only can he get after the quarterback but he is also an excellent force in containing the run.

Vikings’ fans should expect to see an even more improved Hunter in camp this summer. With a year under his belt, he will be coming back with greater confidence and preparation. Should he continue to mold his game, the Vikings may have a budding star for the future. Number 99 will be one to keep an eye on as the Vikings get back to the grind.
