Stephon Gilmore will reportedly be placed on PUP list, miss first 6 games

The New England Patriots most impactful move Tuesday didn't involve Cam Newton. Cornerback Stephon Gilmore will reportedly be replaced on the physically unable to perform list, meaning he'll miss the first six games of the 2021 NFL season, according to Adam Schefter.

Gilmore, 30, is recovering from quad surgery, and needs more time to get right.

It's a significant loss for the Patriots. Gilmore is one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. He's made the Pro Bowl four times, including his last three seasons. He's also been elected to two All-Pro teams and won the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2019.

Stephon Gilmore seeking new contract

The news comes as Gilmore angles for a new contract. Gilmore signed a five-year, $65 million deal with the Patriots in 2017, and is entering the final year of that contract. Gilmore, who will make $7 million in 2021, wants to be paid like one of the best cornerbacks in the game.

Gilmore did not attend offseason workouts with the team, though he did report to training camp. Gilmore was placed on the physically unable to perform list after reporting, and has taken part in team meetings.
