What Steve Cooper expects when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Enzo Maresca return to Leicester City
The affinity towards returning hero Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall will be respected by Steve Cooper and Leicester City, even if the midfielder now wears a different shade of blue.
While most former City stars who have moved to better-placed clubs have been booed on their return, Dewsbury-Hall, as an academy graduate and the reigning player of the season, is likely to get a warm reception when he comes back to the King Power Stadium with Chelsea on Saturday. It’s his first visit back since his £30m summer transfer.
Prior to his switch to Stamford Bridge, he bumped into Cooper at Seagrave, with the midfielder negotiating his exit and the manager on the brink of signing up to replace Enzo Maresca. They’ll meet for a second time on Saturday and while pleasantries may be exchanged, attention will quickly turn to the match.

“He went just before we came in,” Cooper said at his press conference on Thursday morning. “I did meet him once or twice here when he was packing up and getting his boots! We did have a nice conversation but it was the first time we’d ever met.
“I know he has a strong affinity to the club and vice-versa. He came through the academy here and broke into the first team, he’s a very good player. I’m sure a lot of people will be pleased to see him because of the time he spent here. That will be respected. But I’m sure him and certainly us are focused on the game.”
Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off also sees Maresca return to City for the first time since he guided the club to the Championship title. The Italian had a difficult relationship with supporters at times, despite the success he enjoyed, with Cooper praising the job he did.
The current boss said: “Enzo did a brilliant job last season in getting the club back up into the Premier League. It’s no easy task for anybody regardless of what the expectations may be at the start of the season.
“He’s gone on and has had more than a strong start at Chelsea. They’re very different challenges, the Championship to the Premier League, and it’s not one you can compare.”
