Steve Cooper gets in touch as Leicester City caretaker makes new boss point
Steve Cooper’s sacking was “unexpected” for the Leicester City players and a new manager needs to bring “stability” back to the club, caretaker boss Ben Dawson has said.
Cooper was dismissed just 12 Premier League games into the season on Sunday, with City one point outside the bottom three. It means the club are seeking a manager for the second time in five months, with Ruud van Nistelrooy expected to be announced as the new boss later on Friday.
Dawson will take charge of the team at Brentford on Saturday afternoon, in what will be his only game as caretaker. And he says the players know there will be greater scrutiny of their performance in the wake of Cooper’s departure.

Asked about Cooper’s sacking at the club’s press conference on Friday, Dawson said: “It’s a little bit unexpected in terms of the news. I’ve had a few messages back and forth with Steve to check he’s okay. It’s never nice when three good players lose their jobs.
“Then the focus has very quickly shifted onto getting back in with the players, preparing training and looking forward to the game. It’s been a whirlwind, as you can imagine.
“The players shared some of that unexpectedness earlier in the week. There'll be quite a lot of them in the group who have been in similar situations before where a manager has lost his job and they know that’s the time when all eyes are on them. They’ve been professional and worked well.”
While Dawson did not speak about Van Nistelrooy specifically, he did say that a new manager needs to bring “stability” back to the King Power Stadium. The Dutchman’s first game will be next Tuesday, at home to West Ham.
“I think in these situations, it’s about some stability,” Dawson said. “The one thing everybody at a football club wants in these times is some certainty. As soon as a decision is made, everybody can move on, get behind that person and move forward.”
