Steve Cooper is keeping his fingers crossed that Harry Winks will not be ruled out for months with the groin injury that forced him out of Leicester City’s loss to Chelsea.

Cooper had to substitute Winks with barely 10 minutes played of the 2-1 defeat, the midfielder limping out in pain following a tackle on Enzo Fernandez. Oliver Skipp, his replacement, had already been warming up, suggesting Winks felt uncomfortable even earlier.

The extent of Winks’ issue is so far unknown. But having seen Ricardo Pereira ruled out for four months with his muscle injury, City manager Cooper is a little worried.

“It’s his groin,” Cooper said. “Fingers crossed. Sometimes these things can be a week, sometimes they can be… we saw what happened with Ricardo.”

“When I said about needing to do better with the ball, Winksy will start that more than anybody else for us. That’s his super-strength, his control of games and his ability to start attacks and keep momentum in the game. It was a blow, him coming off, and maybe that did have an interference with why we didn’t have enough good moments on the ball in the first half.

“It’s added to a phase we’re going through with injuries. It hasn’t been a clean week. There were lots of lads who a couple of days ago I didn’t think were going to be fit to play, but they’ve managed to get themselves ready.”

But Jannik Vestergaard’s absence was not through injury. Despite starting the last two Premier League games, the Dane was dropped for Caleb Okoli and did not even make the bench, with Conor Coady the substitute centre-back.

Asked why Vestergaard was missing, Cooper said: “Just football. It was nothing untoward in terms of injuries. We just needed cover in certain positions on the bench. It was a football decision, that’s all, he’ll be back in the mix next week I’m sure.”
