Steve Smith is all but confirmed to feature for the Delhi Capitals in the second leg of the IPL 2021, which will take place in the UAE from September 19 and October 15. The tournament will be straightaway followed by the T20 World Cup in the same country.

While Cricket Australia have given their players permission to take part in the remainder of the IPL season, which was suspended mid-way in May due to the covid-19 outbreak, Steve Smith’s participation loomed under uncertainty as he has been dealing with an elbow injury since then.

He pulled out of Australia’s limited-overs tour of West Indies and Bangladesh to tend to his left elbow.

Now, according to a recent report in cricket.com.au, the right-hander has been batting in the nets with comfort in New South Wales’ training facility and is on his path to complete recovery to play in the IPL and the T20 World Cup.

Australia’s limited-overs skipper, Aaron Finch, who himself had surgery on his left knee recently, gave an update of Steve Smith’s progress.

“It seems to be going really well. I know that he’s (Smith) been building up his batting time over the last couple of weeks – I know that would have been difficult to have a time limit on his net times,” Finch told cricket.com.au.

“From all reports he’s been really strict with that, making sure he doesn’t overdo his elbow so it hinders his rehab. He’s going really well. The last time I spoke to him he wasn’t having any pain batting so that was a real positive. He’s going to be such an important part of our campaign,” he added.

Steve Smith was bought by the Capitals in the auction for Rs 2.2 crore after the Rajasthan Royals had released him. He scored 104 runs in 5 innings at 26.00 before the tournament was postponed. He took the number three position in the line-up in place of the injured Shreyas Iyer, who will also now return to the squad.

Rishabh Pant took over the captaincy and has led the side to the top of the table with 6 wins in 8 matches. Delhi’s first game on return is against Sunrises Hyderabad.
