Steve Smith Will Recover From Elbow Injury In Time For The T20 World Cup: George Bailey

Australia Cricket Team’s selection chair George Bailey has hinted that Steve Smith will recover fully in time for the upcoming 2021 T20 World Cup. Smith had suffered the blow early this year but is on the way to full recuperation, as per Bailey.

The talismanic Aussie batsman was struggling with his elbow in the first phase of the IPL 2021. Following the postponement of the league, Smith took a break from cricket to nurse his elbow with the World Cup and the all-important Ashes series in mind.

As a result, he missed Australia’s tours of the West Indies and Bangladesh, where they were subject to dismal defeats. Bailey, who took on the chair selector’s job this year, was optimistic about Smith’s return after engaging in a conversation with him.

“He’s building up nicely. The latest update I had from him is he’s facing up over 100 balls in a session pretty comfortably. That’s about a quarter of what he’d like to be facing for a Test match so he’s got a little bit of building up to go there,” Bailey revealed to reporters.

Steve Smith is no stranger to playing through pain. The 2019 Ashes comes to mind, where he made a comeback to international cricket after being banned for one year. If a similar situation arises and the Australian team needs the 32-year-old right-hander, he’s likely to play, as per Bailey.

“There would obviously be a number where the risk would outweigh the benefit. We’ve got to place a little bit of trust in Steve as someone who knows his body and knows exactly what he needs to be able to perform at a level that’s required,” Bailey added.

Smith’s role in the side is likely to be that of an anchor, as there are plenty of power-hitters around him who can take the attack to the opposition.
