Aston Villa boss and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has told Jurgen Klopp which position needs to be strengthened following the Reds’ Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.

Liverpool were looking for revenge after losing the 2018 Champions League final to the same opponents. But Vinicius Junior bagged the only goal in Paris to help Real continue their stunning record in Europe’s elite club competition.

Liverpool couldn’t get their best attackers involved as much as they would have liked. Even when Mo Salah did have chances, he was thwarted by the impressive Thibaut Courtois.

Klopp’s men must rejuvenate over the summer and bounce back next season. But this won’t be easy after being pipped to the Premier League title and now losing another UCL final.

Villa manager Gerrard was on BT Sport’s coverage of the game at the Stade de France.

Amid Real’s celebrations, Gerrard told Klopp which position can be improved in the future.

“Jordan [Henderson] and James Milner are not getting any younger,” Gerrard said (via Metro).

“They’re still top players at this level, of course, and they’ll want to go on and do more.

“But for Liverpool, if you think about the next five, six, seven years, they’re going to need a midfielder, an eight, who can get goals, who can get double figures.

“They are heavily reliant on the front three – or the front five if you include Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino.

“But you always need one of those midfielders that’s going to get in the box and get you goals.”

One of Liverpool’s main targets in recent weeks has been Monaco star Aurelien Tchouameni. While he wouldn’t bring that many goals to Anfield, the Frenchman would take their midfield to another level.

However, Tchouameni is edging closer to a Real move and this will force Liverpool to look at alternative players.

The Merseyside outfit continue to be linked with Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham.

The Englishman is great at getting forward and helping with attacks. His record during 2021-22 stands at six goals and 14 assists in 44 games.

Bellingham is not yet reaching double figures per season, but at 18 years old he has plenty of time to develop into one of the world’s best stars.

Bellingham’s Dortmund contract lasts until 2025 and there are rumours of an extension. Due to this, Liverpool would need to spend a hefty sum to land him.

Meanwhile, Arsene Wenger has been speaking about Salah and Sadio Mane’s subdued performances on Saturday.
