Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has sent his well wishes to Alan Hansen, after the former Reds' defender was rushed to hospital seriously ill.

On Sunday, Liverpool released a statement to state that the 68-year-old, who is regarded as one of the best defenders in the club's history, is being treated in hospital.

Hansen played for Liverpool through the 1970s, 1980s and into the early 1990s, before he retired in 1991. He became a permanent fixture on Match of the Day for the next part of two decades, stepping away form the program in May 2014.

Gerrard took to Instagram to send his well wishes to the Scot, posting a picture of Hansen accompanied by a praying hands emoji. On Sunday, Liverpool issued a statement regarding Hansen's condition, saying:

"The thoughts and support of everyone at Liverpool FC are with our legendary former captain Alan Hansen, who is currently seriously ill in hospital. A defender of the utmost elegance, Hansen’s outstanding raft of honours across a 14-year spell with the Reds – he joined from Partick Thistle in 1977 – included eight league titles, three European Cups, two FA Cups and three League Cups.

"‘Jocky’, as he was known by teammates, is in the top 10 for all-time appearances for the club having played 620 matches, and the Scottish centre-back also served as Liverpool skipper for four seasons. The club is currently in contact with Alan’s family to provide our support at this difficult time, and our thoughts, wishes and hopes are with Alan and all of the Hansen family.

"We will provide any further updates as we receive them in due course, and we request that the Hansen family’s privacy is respected at this time."

Hansen, himself a club legend, played some 620 games in all competitions for the Reds. He won eight league titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups and three European Cups as part of Liverpool's all-dominating spell from the late 1970s to the early 90s. Hansen also played 26 games for Scotland, with his last cap coming in 1987.

Gary Lineker, who worked alongside Hansen for years as part of Match of the Day, also paid tribute by posting a message on X: "Horrendous news. Thoughts are with Alan, Janet and all the family."
