Pedro Mendes has told Steven Gerrard he would always be welcomed back at Rangers if he chose to return later in his career.

Gerrard became an idol in the eyes of the Ibrox faithful when he led Gers to their long-awaited 55th title in 2020/21, shattering Celtic's 10-in-a-row dreams. The Liverpool legend also put the Glasgow giants back on the European stage, masterminding memorable wins over the likes of Porto, Feyenoord and Braga.

However, Gerrard did leave a sour taste in the mouths of some fans when he abruptly upped sticks for Aston Villa in November 2021. Of course, his return to the Premier League didn't work out as planned as he lasted just 11 months at Villa Park before losing his job. Now rebuilding his managerial career in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq, former Gers favourite Mendes says he wouldn't be surprised to see Gerrard back in the Ibrox hotseat years down the line.

But as for now, Mendes has predicted a bright future under Philippe Clement as the no-nonsense Belgian builds a team capable of overthrowing Celtic this season.

Speaking to BoyleSports, who offer the latest SPFL odds, Mendes said: "Steven Gerrard did a good job at Rangers so a return in the future is always possible. With the job he did in winning the title, it means the door would always be open to a return later in his career.

"But at the moment the board and the fans are keen on Philippe Clement. There has been a really good feeling about him since the moment he signed and I think he needs to be allowed to prepare the team as he wants so he can win a title with Rangers."
