Stoke City went through a painful repeat as an early lead on the road was wiped out to eventually concede a late winner.

For Sunderland on Saturday, read Luton Town on Tuesday and two points given up by Stoke after hard work up until the closing stages. Cue mass frustration in the travelling support.

Tom Cannon had given Stoke an early lead with a well-taken goal from a Million Manhoef through ball but they were made to panic at Luton corners through the first half and Carlton Morris powered in an equaliser.

Both sides had chances to win it but it was Luton that did, in the 90th minute. Stoke couldn’t properly clear a wide free-kick and Elijah Adebayo was alert when it was poked back into the box to spin and shoot past Viktor Johansson.

That’s three defeats in a row for Stoke, no matter how they come, and automatically pressure on the next one, at home to Cardiff on Saturday.

Stoke had gone into the lead in the sixth minute, just like at Sunderland, with another Manhoef assist. This was one was another excellent pass behind the defence but this time for Cannon to sprint onto from the inside left beyond Daiki Hashioka and pick his spot beyond Thomas Kaminski into the far bottom corner.

Unlike the Sunderland game, Stoke were still ahead a couple of minutes later although they did have Viktor Johansson to thank for an excellent piece of goalkeeping. He dashed off his line to take control when Jacob Brown, who had shrugged past Burger, slipped an excellent pass for Morris into the Stoke box. Johansson was there to make the block as Morris pulled the trigger.

Manhoef had Kaminski scrambling when an inswinging corner from the Stoke right hit the angle of bar and front post before Luton grabbed their equaliser from a corner at the other end. Morris charged to meet a Jordan Clark delivery and smashed a header into the bottom left. His was the third away game in a row when Stoke had got the all-important opening goal but without getting the clean sheet to make it count.

Set pieces remained probably Luton’s best hope of finding a winner but just when it looked like Stoke had seen them off for a draw, again, Adebayo stepped up to have the final say. Painful.

Here are the player ratings from Kenilworth Road:

Johansson: Excellent goalkeeping to dash out to block Adebayo in first half. Opted to punch a series of set pieces. 6.5

Wilmot: Able to drag Stoke up the pitch to relieve pressure. Took extra interest in his old pal Brown. 6.5

Bocat: Got into some interesting attacking positions, with excellent skill , although right foot effort wasn’t troubling keeper. 6.5

Rose: Up for the fight with Adebayo but not close enough to prevent spin and shot for winner. Had to concede a couple of unwelcome corners. 6

Phillips: Ready for some old-fashioned defending by winning headers, making blocks and whacking it clear when needed. 6.5

Seko: A little more proactive as he closed down gaps in midfield and tried to move the ball on quickly. 6.5
