Stoner injured in Indianapolis crash

Casey Stoner has sustained a suspected fractured right ankle in a violent crash in qualifying for the Indianapolis Grand Prix.

The MotoGP world champion had a ferocious high-side at Turn 13 early in the qualifying session. Stoner was thrown through the air and landed heavily, feet first, before tumbling through the gravel. His Honda had a separate series of dramatic flips.

Stoner, who was on provisional pole at the time, was taken to the circuit medical centre for treatment. He will undergo an x-ray amid suspicions of a fracture or dislocation.

The Australian is currently third in the world championship in what will be his final MotoGP season before retiring, 32 points behind leader Jorge Lorenzo with eight grands prix remaining.
