Stormzy has called Meghan Markle a “sweet woman” as he spoke out in defence against the public hatred towards her.

The former Suits star has faced a backlash of criticism after she and Prince Harry announced their decision to "step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family, and the grime star believes there is no “credible” reason for the hatred.

Stormzy told New York radio station Hot 97, he said: "Meghan is a sweet woman, she’s a lovely woman, she does her thing, I ain’t heard her say nothing crazy and they just hate her."

The Crown rapper referenced a recent comment by Eamonn Holmes on TalkSport radio, in which he said: "I look at her and I think... I don't think I'd like you."

Stormzy said: “I say, ‘Bro she’s black!’ What you talking about you just look at her and think she’s just got this arrogance. She’s just black, man.”

He added: “If you told someone write a list as to why you hate Meghan Markle, the list is rubbish. There’s nothing credible to it.”

The 26-year-old rapper went on to link the Royal Family to British colonialism. Talking about OBEs and knighthoods he said, “the British Empire is the darkest s**t ever. That is England going to countries and destroying communities."

Stormzy recently came under fire for saying Britain is “definitely, 100%” racist.

Asked by Italian newspaper La Repubblica if Britain was still racist he said: “It’s like, ‘Oh no, we’re not racist’. But there’s a lot of racism in the country. The difficult thing with the UK is, as you said, in Italy it’s a clear problem, whereas trying to explain that Britain is a racist country [to a British person] is the most difficult thing ever... It’s a more difficult case to fight.”

The quote was reported to imply the rapper believed 100% of the UK was racist.

Stormzy told BBC Breakfast: "It's the classic media spin. They know what they're doing. They're weaponising what I said. A lot of people thought I was trying to incite division - but that's what [the media] did, really."
