Strong pitching fuels Lion sweep of Ouachita Baptist

Feb. 10—The Missouri Southern Lions put together two strong performances on the mound en route to a series and double-header sweep of the previously undefeated Ouachita Baptist Tigers (3-3) on Saturday at Warren Turner Field.

The Lions followed a 15-1 Friday win with 6-0 and 5-1 wins on Saturday.

In game one on Saturday, MSSU starter Trent Harris turned in a quality start with eight shutout innings of four-hit baseball. Harris (1-0) struck out six and walked two in the win. Reliever Laif Hultine struck out one batter, gave up one hit and walked one in his one inning of work.

The Lions (6-2) put five runs across in the bottom of third inning and added another in the bottom of the sixth to claim the 6-0 win.

Chayton Beck was the only Lion batter to log multiple hits (2-for-4, with one RBI and one run,) but the other eight hitters in Southern's lineup all logged one single, including a two-RBI hit by Ethan Clark.

In game two of the twinbill, Cole McCallister gave the Lions another quality start, giving up no runs, four hits and striking out eight with no walks in seven innings of work. Kyle Stoddard gave up one run and two hits while striking out two in one inning. Kyle Moore closed out the win for the Lions, giving up one hit while striking out two in one inning of work.

Southern plated four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and after giving up one in the top of the eighth, added a run in the bottom of that frame to claim the 5-1 win.

Drew Townsend, Ethan Clark and Nate Mieszkowski all recorded two hits for MSSU. Clark plated two runs on 2-for-3 hitting. Will Doherty hit a triple for the second time in as many days and Henry Kusiak and Drew Davis both recorded doubles.

The Lions host Oklahoma Baptist (6-1) at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the first of six more home games for MSSU.
