Stuart Armstrong targeted by Premier League and Serie A sides as Southampton face transfer battle

Stuart Armstrong is reportedly being targeted by both Fiorentina and Fulham.

The Scotland midfielder is out of contract at Southampton and available on a free transfer and has various clubs ready to battle it out for his signature. Saints boss Russell Martin is keen to sign the 32-year-old on a new contract but his future remains up in the air as he weighs up his options.

One is to become the latest Scot plying his trade in Italy with Conference League finalists Fiorentina offering him the chance to taste playing abroad, reports the Daily Record. Lewis Ferguson and Aaron Hickey have flourished out there playing for Bologna while Josh Doig has been with Hellas Verona and Sassuolo.

Fulham would like to keep Armstrong in England though while there are said to be other Premier League sides interested. Southampton have themselves returned to the top flight after beating Leeds in the play-off final and are thought to be confident of keeping their man.

Armstrong's current contract runs out at the end of this month and so he could head to the Euros with Steve Clarke's side a free agent if his future hasn't been resolved by that point. He was a doubt for the tournament having missed Saints' run-in through injury but was fit enough to make the squad.

Meanwhile, Martin appears to have a possible replacement in mind as he targets a reunion with Celtic star Matt O'Riley.
