Bosnia striker Vedad Ibisevic – who scored both goals in the 2-0 first-leg win in Germany – opened the scoring in the 64th minute, picking up a long pass from Christian Gentner before sliding the ball past Anton Shunin.

Dan Petrescu’s Dynamo equalised with 13 minutes left as Alexander Kokorin finished from close range after Pavel Nyakhaychyk ‘s far-post knockdown, but it was too little too late and the Germans went through.

Dynamo are bottom of the Russian Premier League after six matches, with former Romania and Chelsea defender Petrescu appointed less than two weeks ago with the brief to arrest their alarming slide.

The rest of the Europa League play-off second legs take place on Thursday.

The group phase draw takes place in Monaco on Friday.
