Succession spoilers follow.

Not even a global pandemic could stop Logan Roy from activating full "beast mode".

Despite numerous delays, Succession season three is finally upon us, and things are well and truly kicking off. But can we already start looking forward to a fourth run of the show?

The hit HBO drama (which could equally be seen as a satirical black comedy) follows billionaire Roy and his dysfunctional offspring, who spend their days stabbing each other in the back in a bid to be named the new CEO of their family's global media empire.

Season three picks up right after that sphincter-clenching season-two finale, where Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong) publicly outed his father Logan (Brian Cox) as a corrupt presence within the company, a move that's bound to make their family Christmases even more awkward.

But however it pans out, we now know that we'll be getting at least one more season of billionaire bickering, and potentially one beyond that.

Speaking to The Times, writer and executive producer Georgia Pritchett said: "I think the maximum would be five seasons, but possibly more like four." She also teased that showrunner Jesse Armstrong (Peep Show) and the creative team already know how they'll be ending the series.

"At this point [Armstrong] is saying only one more [season]. But that happens every time. We've got a good end in sight," she added.

Armstrong himself has also spoken about his vision for the show's conclusion, telling The New Statesman: "There's going to be a very definite moment when that story is over, and it can't go on too long. I think there'll be an end for me in this incarnation of the show in… a bit."

So what will a fourth season entail for the Roys? Here's everything you need to know.

Succession season 4 release date: When will it air?

With season three having only just returned to our screens, and a fourth season not officially confirmed yet, it could be quite some time before a release date is announced.

The first two seasons premiered on HBO in the summers of 2018 and 2019, respectively, so we can probably expect a fourth run to arrive at a similar time in 2022. Season three was only released in October 2021 due to the numerous setbacks caused by the pandemic.

Succession season 4 plot: What will happen?

It's a bit early for plot details, but with season four potentially being the show's last, we can definitely expect the drama to ramp up even higher as the siblings make their final moves to be named as Logan's successor.

Of course there's every chance that the position won't be filled by a Roy family member, with Logan's experienced aide Gerri being named as interim CEO at the start of season three.

With constant twists and turns, it's impossible to know where it's going, and even the cast members are being kept in the dark about the surprises ahead.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Sarah Snook (Shiv) admitted: "It's not something we've discussed. I mean, there's a part of me that would love to know, and also a part of me that like… I actually really enjoy getting to know things, you know, sort of as the audience, in the episodic nature that… you know, as an audience discovers.

"It's been really fun and one of the joys of this show, to be able to episodically discover when you get the new scripts delivered what happens next to the characters. And though I've been told with the second and third seasons when we were shooting them a little bit of an outline, it's very easy to forget when you're being faced with the scripts and the words and all the other things that make up a script to give it life, rather than just overarching plot lines."

Asked how long she thinks the show will run for, she replied: "I don't know. It's definitely up to Jesse and the creative team, I think. And Jesse, as the leader, I think he's got the challenge to keep that bar high, and for us all to climb up to it, and hopefully jump over it.

"And really, at the end of the day, he's a very classy writer, who's not going to make it go longer in a way that's not going to be at the excellent level that it has been so far. As long as it lasts is at long as it lasts [laughs]."

Succession season 4 cast: Who's returning?

Barring some sort of tragic disaster, we fully expect family leads Brian Cox (Logan), Jeremy Strong (Kendall), Sarah Snook (Shiv), Kieran Culkin (Roman), Alan Ruck (Connor), Matthew Macfadyen (Tom), Hiam Abbass (Marcia) and Nicholas Braun (Cousin Greg) to return for season four. It wouldn't be the same show if just one of these cast members left, so we're not expecting anyone to be bumped off or written out just yet.

The same goes for series regulars J Smith-Cameron (Gerri), Peter Friedman (Frank), David Rasche (Karl) and Fisher Stevens (Hugo).

Justine Lupe (Connor's girlfriend Willa) was also promoted to a series regular for season three, so we can probably expect her to stick around for season four as well.

It remains to be seen how big a role newcomer Sanaa Lathan will have in the show moving forward. She's joined season three as Lisa Arthur, a high-profile lawyer who's decided to side with Kendall in his legal battle against his father.

If she returns for another season, we can also probably expect to see Jihae Kim to reprise her role as Berry Schneider, a top public relations consultant.

Succession season 4 trailer: When will it arrive?

Like the Roy siblings, you're going to have to be patient. When a fourth season is officially confirmed, then we can start thinking about a trailer.

In the meantime, as Logan would say, f**k off!

Succession airs on Sky Atlantic in the UK and HBO in the US. Seasons one and two are available on Sky and NOW.
