Marseille will play a waiting game to sign William Saliba this summer despite Arsenal’s intention to offer the player a new contract.

Saliba was a huge hit on loan for the Ligue 1 side under Jorge Sampaoli last season. He played 52 matches and helped OM finish second and reach next season’s Champions League.

He developed into a key player for Sampaoli and the French outfit keen to keep the player for next season. Their president Pablo Longoria has thanked Arsenal for their cooperation and said they will do all they can to try and lure the 21-year-old back.

L’Equipe, via Sport Witness has also claimed Sampaoli “absolutely wants to see Saliba again next season”.

But the French outlet also states that Mikel Arteta is keen to keep hold of the central defender. And the Spaniard is keen to keep the player contracted, long-term to the London club.

The defender, who has yet to kick a ball for the Gunners, is under contract until 2024. But Arteta has not given up hope on the youngster and the club have told him “they want to extend his contract”.

Saliba: ‘I belong to Arsenal’

However, whether that means giving Saliba, who has been linked with Napoli, game time remains to be seen.

Saliba has been capped three times by France, including Monday’s draw with Croatia. And one of his primary aims is to make Didier Deschamps’ squad for the 2022 World Cup.

With that in mind, his game time at the start of next season will be a huge consideration.

Saliba has accepted his return to Arsenal with goodwill.

“I belong to Arsenal, I still have two years left,” he told Telefoot recently. “And I will be back with Arsenal.

“I have played zero matches and I still want to show them my true face and have the chance to play for these fans and this great club.”

Marseille will wait to see the outcome of Saliba’s return to London. A new contract extension could still see Saliba leave if he is not assured any game time with the Gunners. And Sampaoli and OM will be ready to make their move.
