Transfer window 2022: Premier League ins and outs

The 2022 summer transfer window closed with a bang with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang being the biggest-name deadline-day mover as Premier League spending in the summer transfer window headed towards a record £2 billion.

While Aubameyang was sealing his return to London following a disappointing spell at Barcelona after Chelsea opted to take a £10.4m punt on the Gabon international, Manchester United were making winger Antony the most expensive signing of the window having lured the Brazil international to Old Trafford from Ajax in a deal worth £85.5 million.

Antony was the second player United manager Erik ten Hag plundered from his former club after Argentine defender Lisandro Martínez joined for £57m earlier in the window, while five-time European Cup winner Casemiro made the switch to the red half of Manchester from Real Madrid for £70m.

Liverpool broke with recent tradition and signed a deadline-day player in midfielder Arthur Melo – albeit a loan deal from Juventus – with the Brazil international joining up with fellow south American Darwin Núñez, the Uruguayan striker who joined the Merseysiders for a club-record deal of £85m from Benfica.

Comparisons are sure to be drawn between Núñez and new Manchester City player Erling Haaland, who joined the champions after they paid his £51m release clause to sign him from Borussia Dortmund. City strengthened even further with the acquisition of Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who joined the club for an initial £42m plus add-ons.

Tottenham Hotspur had an active transfer window, signing Brazil international forward Richarlison from Everton for £60m, while Ivan Perisic reunited with his former manager Antonio Conte after signing on a free from Inter Milan. Clément Lenglet arrived on loan from Barcelona and Yves Bissouma joined from Brighton for a fee of £35m.

Meanwhile, rivals Arsenal have signed Porto midfielder Fabio Vieira for £34m, and as well as Manchester City forward Gabriel Jesus for £45m and defender Oleksandr Zinchenko for an initial fee of £30m.

Prior to adding Aubameyang to their squad, Chelsea signed Raheem Sterling in a deal which could reach £50m, Wesley Fofana from Leicester City for £70m, Brighton defender Marc Cucurella for £60m and, among others, Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli for £33m. It was a record summer of spending at Stamford Bridge – and the most ever spent by a Premier League club – following the Todd Boehly-led takeover.

Premier League new-boys Nottingham Forest, meanwhile, made an astonishing 21 signings which took their summer spending towards £150m after sealing deadline-day deals for Blackpool winger Josh Bowler and Rennes defender Loïc Badé.
