Must-haves

Defenders

It is not news to anyone that Chelsea are on a very impressive run of form currently and Marcos Alonso has been key to that success. Chelsea have conceded 2 goals in their last 8 games, picking up 6 clean sheets on the way. Alonso has started in all of these matches and he has even pitched in with a goal and 2 assists in that time. For Southampton, last week against Crystal Palace must be considered a blip considering their League Cup triumph over Arsenal and 2 clean sheets before that against Liverpool and Everton. Cédric Soares was a part of the team that achieved those clean sheets and if you’re looking for a cheap defender who regularly starts, he is a cheaper alternative to Southampton’s centre-backs Jose Fonte and Virgil van Dijk.

Midfielders

Surely an obvious pick but Eden Hazard gets the nod from us. He has bagged 6 in his last 7, a run that consisted of tough fixtures on paper against Man United, Southampton, Everton, Spurs and Man City. Another team putting away the goals for fun is Liverpool. Liverpool are the highest scorers in the Premier League this season, with the midfield causing problems for most, so Roberto Firmino gets our backing this week. With recently-back-from-injury Adam Lallana and James Milner pulling the strings behind him, Firmino could be in for a big haul up against an out-of-form West Ham.

Spurs have been on a funny run of form recently, drawing 4 before winning 2 of their last 3. Since returning from injury 4 games ago, Harry Kane has scored 5 goals, only failing to score in the game against top-of-the-league Chelsea. His next 5 consist of an out-of-form Man United, Hull, Burnley, Southampton and Watford so he should definitely be one of your top picks this coming week. To complete the trio of must-have Chelsea suggestions, Diego Costa makes an appearance. Despite being 1 booking away from a suspension, he hasn’t picked up a card since gameweek 6, scoring 6 and assisting 4 in the process! Considering the run of form Chelsea are in, winning 8 games on the bounce, it may be worth the punt to ensure you don’t miss out on those vital fantasy points.

Must-nots

Defenders

Despite their blistering attacking performances, Liverpool aren’t that shored up at the back. Loris Karius has kept 3 clean sheets in 9 games, conceding just a single goal in 4 of those 9 fixtures. If you’ve watched Liverpool recently, you would’ve noticed he looks nervy and flaps at the ball on occasions and Liverpool seem to be reliable as a team that outscores their opponents rather than keeps clean sheets. Another team who miss out on as many clean sheets but don’t have that attacking luxury is West Ham. West Ham have been a shadow of themselves from last season, having only won 3 games all season and conceding 9 goals in their last 3 matches. Part of the Hammers back-line is Winston Reid who has picked up 4 cards in his last 6, one of those a red against Spurs, and so he is definitely one to avoid.

Midfielders

The first choice here may be slightly controversial but with this weekend’s match at Stamford Bridge coming up, Matt Phillips is one to avoid. He is quite a popular selection with fantasy football managers thanks to his bandwagon prompting performances against Burnley & Leicester, but this week he is one to leave out.

Up top, Alvaro Negredo should be one to avoid. Middlesbrough have only scored 13 goals all season, only a slight improvement on the tallies of Burnley and Hull. For Negredo, gameweek 13 against Leicester was a one off as he has only returned more than the standard playing points on 4 occasions, 2 of which were the first 2 gameweeks! Staying at Boro Viktor Fischer is someone who got quite a bit of pre-season hype and assisted in his most recent performance against Hull. Don’t be fooled though as his last start for Middlesbrough before Monday was in gameweek 7 against West Ham. Another man to avoid is Mnchester United’s Marcus Rashford. Despite getting decent playing time, he has been forced to play wide thanks to a certain Swede featuring up top for United. To add to this, United are experiencing their worst start to a season in the post Alex Ferguson era, a stat which Jose Mourinho will not be happy about. To top it all, Rashford hasn’t returned anything significant since gameweek 6 so he is definitely one to avoid.
