Sunil Gavaskar Reacts To MS Dhoni’s Appointment As India’s Mentor For T20 World Cup 2021
Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar believes MS Dhoni’s appointment as a mentor will benefit the Indian team going into the T20 World Cup. However, he is unsure whether Ravi Shastri and Dhoni can get along with their tactics and decision-making.
India announced its squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup. There were a few surprises picks but none bigger than the addition of former legendary captain, MS Dhoni as a mentor. While some believe this could act as the stepping stone to taking over the coaching role, Gavaskar was just happy to see the legendary skipper back in the team.
“Under his leadership, India won the 2011 World Cup, and four years before that, India won the 2007 T20 World Cup. It’s definitely going to benefit Team India. At the time, (then-head coach) John Wright was a bit nervous, he probably thought I was going to take his place.”
“But Ravi Shastri knows that MS Dhoni has very little interest in coaching. Shastri and Dhoni, if the partnership goes well, India will benefit a great deal from it,” Gavaskar pointed out.

Dhoni is a big personality in Indian cricket. During his captaincy days, India has peaked in white-ball cricket and won all the ICC events. He will now be taking on the mentor role and Gavaskar hopes Dhoni and Shastri can function together on the tactical front.
“If there are disagreements over tactics and team selection, then there might be bit of an effect on the team. But Dhoni’s appointment itself will be a big boost for Team India. He has so much experience, he knows everything.“
“There was no bigger, destructive player than Dhoni when he was active in international cricket. His appointment is good news for India but I am just praying there is no clash. But if Shastri and Dhoni can get on the same wavelength, then it’s big news for India,” Gavaskar concluded.
Post-retirement, Dhoni was expected to fade away into the background and live a sedate life in Ranchi but things might take a different turn now that he will be back in the Indian dressing room.
