The Super Bowl is the biggest game in American sport, one of the most-watched matches in the TV sporting calendar.

This year's event is the 56th time the game has been staged, so, in accordance with Roman numerical tradition, it will be known as Super Bowl LVI.

The game will pit the winners of the AFC and NFC conferences against one another in a game of four quarters of 15 minutes which somehow conspires to take about four hours, including the much anticipated half-time show.

The winner will take home the Vince Lombardi trophy but also earn the right to douse their coach with a big bucket of luridly-coloured energy drink and have their excitable quarterback shout the phrase "I'm going to Disneyworld" into the microphone of an accommodating broadcast journalist:

When is the Super Bowl 2022?

Super Bowl LVI will take place on Sunday, February 13.

Which teams are playing?

The two teams that will take part in the Super Bowl are yet to be confirmed. On Sunday January 30, both the AFC Championship game and the NFC Championship game will take place. The Kansas City Chiefs and the Cincinatti Bengals face off for the AFC title while the Los Angeles Rams will do battle with the San Francisco 49ers for the right to call themselves NFC champions.

The two winners of those games will compete for Super Bowl LVI.

What time will it start?

The game will start around 11:30pm in UK time, running until around 3am.

Where is it being held?

Los Angeles, California has the honour. The stunning SoFi Stadium, completed in 2020, will host the game. It cost over $5.5 billion to build and has a capacity of just over 70,000.

Who is the half-time performer?

The half-time show will be performed by a combination of Dr. Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar. Ideal for rap fans.

What happened last year? Who won Super Bowl 55?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, led by the ageless Tom Brady, defeated the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes with a dominant defensive showing. It was Brady's seventh Super Bowl win and his first away from the New England Patriots. Brady will not win an eighth this year, however, with his side losing in the play-offs to the Rams.
