Super League monitoring situation in France

·2-min read

The Super League have said they are continuing to monitor the ongoing travel situation in France ahead of the start of the new season.

New restrictions have recently been announced by the French government. Nobody is allowed to enter France or travel out unless there is a compelling reason.

At the moment, it would appear as though sporting exemptions are not included.

Over the weekend, these new rules saw five matches in rugby union’s European schedule called off. Bath v La Rochelle and Sale v Clermont, which were due to take place on Saturday, were postponed.

Meanwhile, Sunday’s matches between Scarlets v Bordeaux-Begles, Toulouse v Wasps and Stade Francais v Bristol, Worcester v Biarritz and London Irish v Brive were also called off.

The Super League season is due to get underway on 10th February. Catalans are involved in the first match as they take on St Helens at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

Meanwhile, Toulouse’s first match takes place a couple of days later, as they welcome Huddersfield to the Stade Ernest Wallon.

A week later, Catalans also host Wakefield.

Super League say they remain in dialogue with both Catalans and Toulouse. The first two clubs to travel out in 2022 are also in contact with the league.

Super League in dialogue with affected clubs

A statement from the Super League says: “We continue to monitor the situation and are working with both French clubs to understand any exemption status granted to professional sport (same process as Rugby Union Champions Cup are dealing with).

“We’ll meet with both Catalans and Toulouse in the first week of January for updates and have on-going dialogue with both Huddersfield (Rd.1 v Toulouse) and Wakefield (Rd.2 v Catalans) who travel out from the UK first.”
