SUPER SUB: Lallana leaves it late while Austin and Chadli impress

Adam Lallana has enjoyed and endured his time at Anfield in equal measure since his switch from Southampton in the summer of 2014.

The England international was in danger of missing Saturday’s trip to Norwich with a knock he picked up in the previous Manchester United loss, but he came off the bench to settle a rollercoaster classic this time around.

First of all he set up Roberto Firmino for Liverpool’s equaliser at 3-3 with a splendid early cross then, with Norwich seemingly set for a hard-earned point at 4-4, Lallana pounced on a loose ball in the area to drill a shot into the ground and far corner to gift Jurgen Klopp’s outfit a thrilling last-gasp victory.

Whether this sparks a more regular role for Lallana ahead of Euro 2016 remains to be seen, nevertheless he has done his cause no harm at all both for Klopp and Roy Hodgson going forward.

Another wide player looking to book a ticket to France this summer also shone at Selhurst Park. A consistent performer last season, Tottenham winger Nacer Chadli has been plagued by injury this term.

He is a class act, though, and Mauricio Pochettino’s brave substitution at 1-0 down to bring him on for Eric Dier worked wonders to keep Spurs in the race for a first Premier League title.

The Belgian chipped over a tantalising cross over for Harry Kane to head the visitors level, then rounded off the 3-1 comeback win in injury time with a strong run and curled shot into the corner.

Competition is fierce at White Hart Lane finally therefore Chadli will need to follow up with more enterprising displays to keep ahead of Erik Lamela, Josh Onomah and the like.

Charlie Austin was banging in the goals for QPR in the top flight, their relegation robbing him of the stage to impress Hodgson for a place in the England squad alongside Kane, Wayne Rooney and Jamie Vardy.

Southampton have swooped to provide him with the spotlight again and his late strike off the bench at Old Trafford looks like reviving Saints’ season.

Unbelievably left free in the area by the tepid home defence, he planted home a header from a free-kick to possibly end Louis van Gaal’s troubled reign.

How Manchester United fans could do with James Wilson right now. While Rooney and co were firing blanks up north, he replaced Bobby Zamora and scored Brighton’s winner to keep their Premier League promotion hopes well and truly alive in a tense 2-1 win over Huddersfield.

Honourable mention also goes to sub Shaun Whalley, who left it until three minutes into injury time to crack home a winner for Shrewsbury at Burton Albion to aid their League One survival bid.

Christian Ribeiro too deserves credit for coming off the bench to hand Exeter City a 2-1 home victory over Accrington Stanley that maintains their chance of a League Two playoff spot.

Further up that table, Jordan Bowery was the hero for Oxford United when he replaced Alex MacDonald at Portsmouth and snatched a vital three points that puts them seven clear of their promotion rivals.

At the other end, we’ll only know how important Tahvon Campbell’s second goal for Yeovil Town off the bench in their 2-1 win against Crawley will be when the relegation spots are confirmed in May.

In Europe, Inter Milan were denied on Sunday by one of the more bizarrely named strikers in Serie A when Kevin Lasagna struck a left-footed leveller two minutes into stoppage time for visitors Carpi.

Rodrigo Palacio had given the San Siro residents a 39th-minute lead to keep them in the title hunt, however Lasagna’s substitute intervention leaves Inter six points off leaders Napoli now.

Carpi, meanwhile, are still five points from safety at the other end of the table but Lasagna’s dramatic equaliser could give them hope in a bid to escape relegation.

Switching sports, two Bordeaux-Begles replacements conspired to defeat Clermont Auvergne on their own turf in the Champions Cup Pool 2 and help propel Exeter Chiefs into the quarter-finals as a result.

Paulin Riva’s 68th-minute try allied with Pierre Bernard’s two conversions and penalty ensured that the hosts run in the competition came to a shuddering halt and Exeter now face fellow Premiership side Wasps in the last eight.
