Organisers of the ninth event on this season's ASP World Tour made the call when it became clear conditions at the famous pointbreak of Steamer Lane were not going to match the previous day.
Then, in surfable, if not perfect waves, Kelly Slater was stunned in his opening heat by Nat Young, who forced the reigning 11-times world champion into the second round.
Slater will be one of several big names to surf in round two once action recommences in California.
“With the dropping swell and incoming tide we have decided to call competition off for today,” ASP international head judge Rich Porta said.
“We’ll be back tomorrow morning at 7:45am to make the call for a possible start to round two.”
