Slater, 41, current ASP World Championship Tour (WCT) number one, returned to Rio de Janeiro after a 2012 absence due to a foot injury, and was completely dominant in his round one bout, threading a number of impressive forehand barrels to collect a 16.30 out of a possible 20 heat total to advance directly into round three.

Reigning ASP World Champion Joel Parkinson of Australia, 32, opened up the 2013 season with a runner-up finish to Slater on the Gold Coast before an uncharacteristic equal 13th at Bells Beach, but was joined by Gold Coast stablemate, compatriot and current ASP WCT number two Mick Fanning, 31, in round one victories.

Brazilian Adriano de Souza, 26, continued his 2013 momentum netting a solid first round win over Australians Matt Wilkinson, 24, and Yadin Nicol, 27.

Jordy Smith, 25, current ASP WCT number seven, opened up his Billabong Rio Pro campaign with an impressive 16.94 out of a possible 20 showing to advance directly into the third round.

Finishing the day’s action was a stellar showing from the 2013 rookie class with Sebastian Zietz, 25, Glenn Hall, 31, and Nat Young, 21, all posting round one wins.
