The surprise new contract Eddie Howe wants to hand out at Newcastle United
Eddie Howe has insisted that Callum Wilson could still have a future at St James' Park beyond this season.
The number 9 was back in training today and is hoping to be in contention for the clash against West Ham after a longstanding back injury which has ruled him out of the whole season so far. Wilson who still hit double figures last term had been in Doha for his rehab but is back with the senior squad.
His current deal will expire at the end of the season and there have been links with Saudi Pro League clubs in the last few transfer windows. When asked if Wilson could still trigger a new deal, Howe said today: "Is there a scenario where Callum could stay beyond his current deal? Of course there is.

"Callum’s got outstanding qualities. I know everyone in football has short memories, but you look at what Callum has done since I’ve been here – when he’s been on the pitch, he’s been incredible."
Wilson's return is deemed as key for Newcastle in order to have plenty of cover for Alexander Isak. Newcastle legend Rob Lee underlined the dangers of losing the star man this week and those fears have been echoed by Eddie Howe.
Howe spoke of the importance of Isak and Wilson rotating and said: "That Champions League season, the way he and Alex (Isak) dovetailed together, to help each other and help the team to produce some brilliant performances and results was brilliant to see.
"Now, for a long period of time, we’ve lost that ability to play them together or to help them share the load. That’s been a real frustration of mine, and I know for the players themselves too."
