Surrey are hopeful that Ben Foakes will play in their final County Championship game of the season against Glamorgan on Tuesday, but will leave any decision late and will take no risks with the wicketkeeper’s fitness.

Foakes has been out of action since late May after suffering a freak injury, slipping in the changing room at the Kia Oval after Surrey’s draw with Middlesex.

The badly-torn hamstring cost him a home Test debut in the series against New Zealand and has ruled him out of county action for more than three months.

Foakes made a cautious return to Second Team action with Surrey against Gloucestershire earlier this month, scoring 37 in his only innings and taking three catches.

There is optimism that he could play in Surrey’s final Championship game of the season, against Glamorgan at the Kia Oval, but risks are unlikely to be taken if he is not 100 per cent fit.

Foakes seems certain to be part of England’s Ashes party, with a large squad taken and the possibility that Jos Buttler could withdraw (Jonny Bairstow has not made his position on the tour public).

Surrey are set to be without club captain Rory Burns again next week, having played all four Tests in England’s series against India. Lancashire are also set to be without jimmy Anderson for their pop at the title against Hampshire at Liverpool.

Surrey’s meeting with Glamorgan will be the final game of Rikki Clarke’s long career. He is one of a number of senior players leaving the club, including Jade Dernbach and Liam Plunkett, while Mark Stoneman has already departed for Middlesex. Bowlers Chris Jordan and Daniel Worrall will join from Sussex and Gloucestershire respectively.

Surrey have very little to play for in their final game of the season, the last in Division Two of the conference system that looks set to be scrapped next year.
