Newcastle United defender Sven Botman looks to have avoided a fresh setback after feeling fatigue in the wake of two games in four days upon his return from injury.

The Dutchman has returned to first-team duty without missing a beat, excelling alongside Dan Burn in wins at Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal in the last week. However, Botman did feel a slight issue with his groin midway through the Carabao Cup victory in midweek as kept a well-earned clean sheet.

Quizzed on the player's fitness ahead of this weekend's clash with Bromley, Howe admitted: "Sven's doing well, yeah, I think there was naturally just a build up of fatigue. It's a big ask for him to play the two games that he did.

"With consultation with Sven and the medical team, he felt he was able to go again against Arsenal, a very quick turnaround and two high level games. I thought he was absolutely brilliant in both games and when you consider he was feeling a bit fatigued in his groin, I think in the second half, you wouldn't have known in his performance.

"He was determined, physically excellent in near enough every respect and especially when again you consider he's on an unnatural side of the pitch, you wouldn't have known and that gives us real food for thought for the future that he could play that role. So fingers crossed no ill effects."

Alexander Isak will sit out of the FA Cup fixture this weekend after nursing a slight hamstring issue himself in the aftermath of Arsenal. The Swede will likely be joined by other key stars as Howe looks to hand out much-needed minutes to a host of his fringe players.

"We knew we would have to rotate our squad but we've got very good players that are desperate to play and desperate to show their qualities," he said. "It's a good game for them to showcase those qualities but also we have to get through so we have to pick a strong enough squad."
