Reports claim Newcastle United are set to blow rival clubs out of the water with a revised bid for in-demand Lille defender Sven Botman.

The Magpies were first linked with the 22-year-old stopper in the January transfer window. Manager Eddie Howe targeted a number of players to try and bolster the side’s chances of avoiding relegation. And he did just that, with new arrivals helping them rally to finish 11th.

However, the Tynesiders could not get a deal over the line for Botman, who remained with Les Dogues. But, with the summer window now open, the Netherlands international’s future is very much back in the news.

Stories have been emerging every day, with Manchester United entering the picture. And Arsenal joined the Red Devils in being linked with the rangy centre-half on Thursday.

Milan have also been mentioned in connection with the former Ajax youth star.

It was said the Premier League duo made enquiries about the player but they may prove futile if the latest report is true.

The Dutchman has been valued at around the €35m mark. But MilanNews are suggesting that Newcastle are prepared to offer between €50m and €55m.

That figure, if correct, means Milan would not be able to compete financially with the Saudi-backed outfit. It is now a waiting game to see if either United or the Gunners respond by upping their own bid.

Botman weighing up options

Botman is yet to play for the Oranje senior side despite multiple outings for the Dutch youth teams. But his time will come and a move to the Premier League would further enhance his chances.

Newcastle do seem to be in pole position for his signature but they cannot offer Champions League football. The talented youngster seemed keen to join a club playing in Europe’s elite competition.

But, with Milan out of the picture, none of the English trio finished in the top four. United and Arsenal will play in the Europa League in 2022-2023 while Newcastle’s focus will be continual improvement at St James’ Park.

The north-east outfit now have the resources to compete with most clubs in the market.

Their possible journey to the top is just beginning. And Botman is young enough to be around for the challenge of taking the club to the next level over the coming years.
