Newcastle United’s hopes of signing Sven Botman have been given a boost as AC Milan have yet to agree a deal with Lille, which leaves the door open for other clubs.

Newcastle are one such club and reports from TuttoMercatoWeb say the Magpies are pushing hard. They claim that Newcastle are very serious about a deal. Although Manchester United are also in the hunt and will be a threat to Eddie Howe’s men.

It is well known that Howe wants a new central defender. A number of names have been linked including Arsenal’s William Saliba. However it is not long before reports drift back to Botman. There is no smoke without fire and the Dutchman is clearly a Newcastle target.

Their chances have been given a boost by Milan dragging their feet. Botman would prefer a move to the San Siro. Indeed reports have claimed that he has already agreed a contract with Milan.

But the newly crowned Serie A champions have yet to agree a fee with Lille. Therefore the door remains open. The problem for Milan is they are going through a takeover. While that is the case they are unable to finalise anything.

While Botman would prefer a move to Milan, he will not wait forever. He will look at other offers and according to a separate report in Calciomercato, Newcastle have launched a big one.

They also claim that the Milan takeover has given Newcastle fresh hope a deal can be done. They report Newcastle had not long ago given up hope. But the switch could be back on with Newcastle making a big bid.

The offer they claim trumps what Milan are willing to pay both Lille and the player. It puts Newcastle in a strong position, but Manchester United still remain a threat.

Sven Botman a man in demand

It is easy to see why Newcastle are pushing the boat out to try and land Botman. The Dutchman is only 22 but already has vast experience in France. He help Lille win the Ligue 1 title in his debut season, missing just one game. Botman has impressed again this season and is ready to take the next step.

Furthermore he is a left-footed central defender and can bring balance to any backline. £25million would be quite an outlay. But he is by no means the most expensive central defender out there. And that value is only going one way if he continues to shine. So with that in mind now is the time to swoop.

The fact that new Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is sniffing around also says a lot. Hence why Newcastle are reported to have gone in big now in an effort to get the deal done.
