Swans are flying in Europe!

As we began Euro 2016, who’d have thought we’d have seen all four Swansea City internationals still in the tournament at the quarter-final stage?

But that’s exactly what’s happened over the past few days. And while the argument that the four may have some fatigue issues going into the new season is certainly valid, the experience they’ve gained on the international knock-out stage surely supersedes that.

In the first match of the last 16, Poland were in action against Switzerland, with Lukasz Fabianski taking the gloves for the Poles, while Wojciech Szczesny remained sidelined with injury.

But their second keeper certainly pleased the Polish fans as he made some breathtaking saves through the first 90 minutes, letting just the one goal slide past him - the spectacular bicycle kick from Xherdan Shaqiri in the last ten minutes.

Fabianski was unable to save anything in the penalty shootout that followed, but a missed kick from the Swiss saw Poland seal the first spot in the quarter-finals, meaning we should see Fabianski again this tournament.

The second last 16 game saw another two Swans in action, as Ashley Williams and Neil Taylor (who now has a taste for goal!) played for Wales against Northern Ireland in Paris.

A much more cagey affair compared to the sensational Russian match, but an own goal ensured Wales would head into the next round. Not before Ashley Williams collided with Jonny Williams and badly injured his shoulder. Let’s hope he’s not done too much damage. Neil Taylor was less impressive in front of goal in this game, but he still helped keep a clean sheet, so he remains in everyone’s good books!

Finally on Monday we saw Swans star Gylfi Sigurdsson’s Iceland beat a severely poor England in the final day of last 16 matches. While Sigurdsson failed to score (although his namesake did), he worked as hard as usual and was a crucial part in one of the upsets of the tournament.

Poland play Portugal on Thursday, Wales will take on Belgium on Friday, while Iceland will battle the hosts France on Sunday. See you in the semis?
