Swansea City Fan View: 3 players who MUST start against Leicester

After a solid victory at the Liberty last week, the question has been asked – can Swansea make it back-to-back home wins?

I say yes. But I want to see a couple of specific players on the field.

Forget the likes of Fabianski and Mawson – who are pretty much staples of the first team. I’m talking about those positions up for debate, such as strikers and midfielders.

So, here are the three players who I believe should start on Saturday:

Roque Mesa

Making a rare appearance for Swansea… it’s Roque Mesa!
Making a rare appearance for Swansea… it’s Roque Mesa!

Roque Mesa is a talented guy – £11 million of talent, brought to the club with much excitement in the summer. But since then he’s played a very limited part, even though he’s actually impressed during some of the 130 or so minutes of football he’s played. Well, as much as a Swansea player could impress in the dire setups he’s been played in.

Sure, he was at fault for conceding a goal in his last game, but that was no excuse for leaving him out against Huddersfield. I mean, he wasn’t even on the bench. As much as he is apparently part of Clement’s plans, leaving him out ahead of someone like Sam Clucas is… well, clueless!

Despite actually winning that game, Clement should have started Mesa.

And he should start him on Saturday. Mesa isn’t a loan player, who will sulk off back to him home club when his loan term is finished. In theory he’s here for the long run, so should be nurtured.

Tammy Abraham

Tammy Abraham is the star of the moment -the Swans must use him!

Unlike Mesa, Tammy Abraham is a loanee, and – as such – we should make use of him to the full extent.

He’s been a refreshing accrual, compared to some of the rubbish we’ve had up front in recent seasons. As I mentioned in my last article on the win against Huddersfield, he is keen, skillful and quick, and actually puts goals away. He’s a poacher and grabs every opportunity he can.

Compare him to Wilfried Bony. The Ivorian is a Swansea City legend (well a modern day legend at least), but there’s clearly something not right. He couldn’t get game time at Man City or Stoke, so we can’t expect him to turn into Bony circa 2014 overnight. While Bony needs time to get back to 100%, it shouldn’t be at the expense of giving Abraham starts.

Meanwhile, with a bit of a striker shortage at Chelsea, Blues fans are asking for Abraham back. Thankfully there is no call-back clause in the loan deal, so we’ve got him until the end of the season – let’s squeeze every last goal out of him!

Luciano Narsingh

Perhaps Narsingh isn’t a name you expected me to suggest, but I was impressed by him in the Huddersfield match.

It wasn’t a complete display, but he injected one thing that’s been missing from the previous handful of losses – speed. There also seemed to be more direction, as Narsingh chose to run at defenders, instead of trying to pass around them.

Start him again and see if he can replicate – even improve – on his performance. Why not?
