Swindon school pupils enjoy peek into world of Formula 1 with Silverstone experts

PUPILS at Noremarsh Junior School enjoyed an exciting afternoon exploring the world of motorsport with help from the Silverstone Interactive Museum.

Outreach officer Charlie Clark visited Royal Wootton Bassett to deliver STEM workshops to all the year groups, talk about motorsport career opportunities and explain what goes on behind the scenes at Formula One.

The youngsters got the chance to try on helmets and race suits as well as examine Formula One race tyres, carbon fibre bodywork and suspension components.

Charlie said: “We offer interactive workshops to encourage enjoyment of STEM in a hands-on environment, and [show] the motorsport industry is not just about the driver.”

One year 5 student said: “I couldn’t hear very much with the helmet on and it was really tight.  I wouldn’t want to wear it for a long time.”

Another pupil said: “The [tyres] are so big and really heavy."

Headteacher Hilary MacMeekin added: “We celebrate children's differences and try to find a wide range of experiences to enhance and enrich our curriculum.

"These workshops have been brilliant. They are a fun, interactive way to open a child’s mind to something they may have never heard of or considered before."
