T20 World Cup 2021: Ravichandran Ashwin Reacts To His Selection In India's Squad
T20 World Cup 2021: Ravichandran Ashwin Reacts To His Selection In India's Squad

Ravichandran Ashwin has returned to India‘s white-ball setup after four years. He has been named in the 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup later in the year in the UAE. He pipped over Yuzvendra Chahal and Krunal Pandya after Washington Sundar was ruled out of the tournament due to a finger injury.

Following his selection’s announcement, the 34-year-old posted a tweet highlighting the mantra with which he has dealt in the past four years. ‘Happiness and gratitude’ are the major feelings of the champions cricketer on this joyous occasion for him.

The Tamil Nadu off-spinner last featured in a white-ball international in July 2017, and has been excluded from the side as the leg-spinning pair of Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav emerged. However, post the 2019 World Cup, in which India lost in the semi-final, the pair has been separated and both have underperformed.

Now, with both the wrist-spinners ousted and the young players in Rahul Chahar and Varun Chakravarthy taking over, the return of Ravichandran Ashwin signals a new dawn for him. He would also be eyeing the ODI return considering the 2023 World Cup is at home.

Chief Selector Chetan Sharma reveals why Ravichandran Ashwin is included in the Squad

Washington Sundar’s injury paved the way for Ravichandran Ashwin’s comeback into India‘s T20I squad for the T20 World Cup, is what BCCI Chief Selector Chetan Sharma had to say regarding the recall of Ashwin. Chetan Sharma also highlighted that India needed an off-spinner to make use of the pitches in the UAE.

While away from the white-ball team, Ashwin was a key player of his IPL franchise. He captained Punjab in IPL 2018 and 2019 seasons, snapping 10 and 15 wickets respectively.

He then shifted to Delhi Capitals in 2020 and picked up 13 wickets at an economy of 7.67; importantly, Ashwin has been a wicket-taking option in the powerplay.

“He (Ravichandran Ashwin) has been performing well in IPL. In World Cup, spinner fingers are must. An off-spinner was needed as Washington Sundar is injured,” Chetan Sharma was quoted as saying.

India play their first encounter on October 24 against arch-rivals Pakistan in Dubai. New Zealand, Afghanistan, and two other teams that come through from the qualifiers are alongside India in Group 2 of the Super 12 stage.
