Liverpool are close to finalising the sale of Takumi Minamino – but the Japan forward will not be staying in the Premier League as initially expected.

The Japan forward has endured a frustrating spell at Anfield since a bargain move from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2020. With Liverpool boasting a vast array of attacking talent, Minamino has often found himself on the subs bench or limited to cup appearances. However, when called upon, Minamino has not let anyone down.

Indeed, he finished the 2021/22 campaign with an impressive 10 goals, despite only starting nine games for the Reds. His treatment by Jurgen Klopp, however, has not gone down well with the player, who admits his lack of chances left him feeling angry.

And with Liverpool splashing out a club-record fee to bring in Darwin Nunez, the Reds are likely to focus on moving players on to claw back some of that transfer deficit.

Thankfully for Minamino, he is not short of options.

To that end, the likes of Leeds, Southampton, Wolves and Fulham are all reportedly keen to keep Minamino in the Premier League. And with his agent recently flying in for talks, it seems a move away from Anfield is edging closer.

Of those four clubs, it was Leeds who were reportedly leading the way.

Takumi Minamino heading to Monaco

However, Sky Sports News claims it is Monaco who have reached an agreement with Liverpool.

The Ligue 1 side – cash-rich from the sale of Aurelien Tchouameni to Real Madrid – have struck a deal worth £15.5m. That includes an initial payment of £12.9m, with a further £2.6m in add-ons.

The 27-year-old will now travel to the south of France to undergo a medical and to discuss personal terms. And all being well, his move to the Stade Louis II could be finalised before the weekend is over.

That will grant Liverpool around double their initial investment on Minamino.

Truth be told, Minamino never really stood a chance of becoming a regular at Anfield. With their vast array of attacking talent, he was always a long way down their pecking order.

A move away from Liverpool will, therefore, come at the right time for the player. He has never let anyone down at Anfield and he will hope to become a regular at Monaco.

The Ligue 1 side finished third in Ligue 1 last season. As such, they will enter the Champions League if they navigate through the qualifiers. What are the prospects of Monaco then seeing themselves paired against the Reds in the group stages?…

Meanwhile, Loris Karius has spoken out on Sadio Mane’s switch to Bayern Munich, explaining what delights him about the impending transfer.
