Today’s Talking Point

Residents in a third London borough were today urged to get tested for the South African variant of Covid-19, in sustained efforts to protect the capital from the mutation.

Testing sites have already been rolled out in Wandsworth and Lambeth, where dozens of cases of the strain have been detected.

The extra testing comes amid concerns that the SA variant may be more resistant to some vaccines, although the jabs approved for use in the UK are still thought to offer significant protection against severe disease.

But with lockdown restrictions having just eased, will the rise in these variant cases make you more hesitant about going out and socialising? Let us know in the comments for your chance to be featured in tomorrow’s Talking Point.

Yesterday’s Talking Point: What’s the most important issue to you in the London mayoral election?

Yesterday we asked what issue will take precedence for you when voting in the mayoral election.

An exclusive poll for the Standard revealed that crime has become London’s top concern, but not many of you shared this view in the comments.

Martin Reynolds said that his top concern was “getting cars back to using all the roads and getting rid of LTN’s.” “Le Ja Vu,” meanwhile, was most concerned about health.

Lorena Arikamedoshika Woodfine, on the other hand, was more concerned about the economy. She said: “The most important issue is money. The average mortgage is 1030% higher than it was 20-30 years ago. Salaries are 10% higher. When a highly paid teacher of 20 years can’t get a mortgage because they don’t earn enough, it shows how messed up things have gotten in this country. Which is why MILLIONS are now using food banks. Crime is pretty low on the list for most of us in reality.”
