England 1-0 Argentina: Jodie Taylor sends Lionesses into last 16

Jodie Taylor’s second-half strike helped England seal a 1-0 win over Argentina and maintain their position at the summit of Group D in the Women’s Football World Cup.

Phil Neville’s Lionesses were in control from the off in France and only failed to go 1-0 up when Nikita Parris’ first-half penalty was saved.

But they stepped up the pressure in the second half and Taylor was on hand in the box to tap home and seal three points in a dominant performance in Le Havre.

With an attacking 4-3-3 formation England started on the front foot, particularly down the left flank as Beth Mead displayed her classy footwork and pace early on.

Jill Scott won a header in the box in the game’s opening but was only able to fire straight at Vanina Correa as England dominated possession – a trend that would continue.

The left side continued to be fruitful for Neville’s side and it was the combination of Mead and Alex Greenwood that earned the first real opportunity – Greenwood felled in the box when attempting to cross.

Parris stepped up for the penalty and shot to her right but Correa produced an excellent save to tip it on to the post – Taylor unable to steer in the rebound.

With the score 0-0 at the break England piled on the pressure straight after the restart, Parris skipping away down the right and swinging the ball across the face of the goal, but no teammate on hand to convert it.

Parris was the provider again minutes later, dinking a cross in from the right Jodie Taylor, the striker only able to head at Correa’s feet.

The crucial breakthrough came just after the hour as Mead, excellent all night, crossed in low to give Taylor an easy tap-in.

Argentina tried to find an equaliser but couldn’t threaten the England goal, with Neville’s side pressing for a second and left to celebrate the win.
