England team selections always generated debate and that will no doubt be the case with the cast list for the National Theatre production of a play about Gareth Southgate's reign as national coach.

It was already known that Joseph Fiennes would play Southgate in Dear England but the rest of the cast has now been announced for the play starting at the Olivier Theatre in the West End on June 11, just before Southgate’s team have Euro qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia.

"That's generous casting!” was Southgate’s reaction when asked about Fiennes playing him earlier this season. “I don't know what to make of it really. The play I think is about the team. No, I won't be going to watch it. It wouldn't feel right.”

Scriptwriter James Graham, who wrote Sherwood, wrote the play about the shift in culture under Southgate, which saw fans reconnect with the team.

And England players now have the answer to who would play them if their lives were on stage.

Those set to see their roles rekindled at the National Theatre aren’t limited to those on the field either, with discredited former Football Association chair Greg Clarke - who was forced to resign from his role in 2020 after his calamitous appearance before the DCMS Select Committee - set to be played by Royal Shakespeare Company regular John Hodgkinson, while ex-FA chief executive Greg Dyke will be depicted by New Tricks and Foyle’s War actor Tony Turner.

Actor Crystal Condie will play former Lioness and current BBC presenter Alex Scott, and Paul Thornley will play Mike Webster.

The line-up is dominated by current England internationals who helped carry the nation’s hopes through to the last four at the 2018 World Cup, the Euro 2020 final and last year’s World Cup quarter-finals, while there is also an appearance for a well-known former Three Lions manager who has recently jettisoned himself back into the headlines.
