Team by team analysis of Italian Grand Prix

(Reuters) - Team by team analysis of Sunday's Italian Grand Prix at Monza, round eight of the Formula One season (listed in current championship order):

MERCEDES (Valtteri Bottas 5, Lewis Hamilton 7)

Hamilton started on pole for the 94th time in his career and seventh at Monza. He led until the halfway point when he had to serve a 10 second stop/go penalty after the re-start for a safety car infringement. That dropped him to last and he fought back to seventh. He maintained his 47 point lead, however, after setting the fastest lap (his 50th in F1). Bottas had started on the front row but made a poor start and was sixth at the end of the opening lap. The Finn still moved up to second overall.

RED BULL (Alexander Albon 15, Max Verstappen retired)

Verstappen started fifth, suffered wheel spin and dropped down the order before retiring on lap 30 with an engine problem. He is now third. Albon suffered floor damage from a turn one contact with Gasly and also collected a five second time penalty for failing to leave space for Grosjean.

MCLAREN (Carlos Sainz 2, Lando Norris 4)

The best result for McLaren since 2014. Sainz made a great start from third. He was still disappointed with his best result so far, feeling he could have won. He might have done with one more lap after reeling in Gasly. Norris gained three places at the start and felt he should have been on the podium.

RACING POINT (Lance Stroll 3, Sergio Perez 10)

Stroll's second podium and first with Racing Point lifted him to fourth overall in the standings. He might also have won but lost out at the re-start when he dropped to sixth. Perez paid for a poor start, losing out to both McLarens and having a collision with Verstappen that left him with a damaged car.

RENAULT (Daniel Ricciardo 6, Esteban Ocon 8)

Renault moved ahead of Ferrari. Ocon gained three places at the start while Ricciardo passed Bottas. Both lost out ultimately to the safety car and red flags.

FERRARI (Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel retired)

Ferrari's first double retirement from their home race since 1995. Vettel lasted only six laps before a brake failure while Leclerc crashed at Parabolica, bringing out red flags. They fall to sixth and are 10 points adrift of Renault.

ALPHA TAURI (Pierre Gasly 1, Daniil Kvyat 9)

Gasly celebrated an astonishing first win in F1 and AlphaTauri's second after the first by Sebastian Vettel at the same circuit in 2008, when the team were known as Toro Rosso. The Frenchman pitted just before Magnussen brought out the safety car, with the pitlane then closed. He took the lead after the re-start when Hamilton pitted for a penalty. Kvyat was less fortunate with the safety car and stoppage.

ALFA ROMEO (Kimi Raikkonen 13, Antonio Giovinazzi 16)

Raikkonen was second after the re-start but the tyres did not last. Giovinazzi also collected the same 10 second stop/go penalty as Hamilton.

HAAS (Romain Grosjean 12, Kevin Magnussen retired)

Magnussen suffered front wing damage on the opening lap, pitting for a new one, and brought out the safety car when he stopped after 17 laps due to a power unit problem. Grosjean started 16th.

WILLIAMS (Nicholas Latifi 11, George Russell 14)

The last race under the founding family, with Claire Williams now stepping away following last month's sale to Dorilton Capital.
