Manager Erik ten Hag praised his side’s collective spirit after Manchester United beat Leicester City 1-0 on Thursday night.

The Red Devils secured their third successive top-flight victory with a narrow triumph at King Power Stadium. Jadon Sancho scored the only goal of the game on 23 minutes, finishing well from Marcus Rashford’s pass. The result sees the Old Trafford giants move up to fifth, while the Foxes remain rooted to the foot of the table.

James Maddison’s second-half free-kick tested United keeper David de Gea but the visitors were in control for most of the contest.

Ten Hag was delighted with the result and felt his charges worked hard for one another throughout the 90 minutes.

“It is another step forward so I am happy with that,” he told BT Sport. “We showed good team spirit. We had 11 players on the pitch who fought for each other and scored a lovely team goal.”

However, the Dutch tactician believes there is much to work on for his Manchester United side.

“Still, there is improvements to make but that is normal at this stage of the season,” he added. “There were many spaces that we did not exploit that well. With better decisions we should have scored a second goal.

“We have to be more ruthless, but, as I said there is room for improvement.”

Ten Hag hails Sancho contribution

Sancho bagged his second league goal of the campaign. And his manager feels the England international is benefitting from decent preparation ahead of the campaign.

“Jadon had a good pre-season and you can see he can make a difference,” he continued. “But also the whole team can make a difference – I think it was a great team goal. I am also happy with the clean sheet. When we have 11 players on the pitch who can defend and attack together, and we have energy, you see what you can achieve.”

Big names ready to roll

Cristiano Ronaldo was once again on the substitutes bench and came on with 22 minutes remaining. New signing Casemiro was given 30 minutes and Ten Hag is relishing the duo making more of an impact as the season progresses.

“We need a good squad and we needed numbers. There are a lot of games to cover,” he said. “Once we have Cristiano Ronaldo and Casemiro getting fitter it will get better still – we need not only a team we need a squad.

“We will see with Anthony after training whether he is ready for Sunday. When there is a good opportunity, we have to strike but I think the building is closed – for now.”
